SPACE COWBOYS by oxboxer SPACE COWBOYS by oxboxer
My school's illustration department does this great thing every semester called "Costume Carnival" where all the clothed figure models collaborate and go nuts in this extravagant themed life-drawing day. There is free pizza involved. It is quite the shindig.

This year's theme: Space Cowboys. I freaking love my school sometimes, you guys, seriously.

Two of the models this year (the girl with the amazing helmet and the creepy body-painted Martian witch) are actually friends of mine and great illustrators in their own right! I know they worked their asses off to help make this thing happen... Hopefully my drawings are worthy of the effort they put in. :)

All drawings done straight with my very abused Pentel brush pen. I've been doing a lot of life drawing with that thing lately; something about throwing a black brushstroke down and being done with it does more for me than my typically indecisive penciling...

Interesting. Reminds me of the style of the title-credit art of the 1960s television series "The Wild Wild West"

Have you ever realized that in succession, with such vibrant colors, that it looks like the opening to a Bond film?! IT DOES!

This sounds like a ton of fun! There are outside of school groups that do something similar around here, and Dr. Sketchy, if I ever have the time to get to the nearest place to me that does that....

There's one 90minutes away from where I live so I can't go all the time, but one of these months I'm clearing my evening and drawing a dancer!

Oh, those pens are great. You can grab them in any good Japanese stationary store. Here's what they look like: [link]

I've got both, but I'd rec the Color Brush since the actual brush tip is larger and you have a degree of control over how much ink it puts down (making drybrushing possible, as well as really chunky wet blacks). The pocket one has more waterproof ink, though, and of course it's smaller and cuter. :3

whoaaaa!!! so cool, now I'm excited to get some I'll quickly
make a trip to the art store, sadly I don't have any Japanese stationary store around, only gift shops ):
but thankyou for the recommendation!! * w *
I'll definitely hunt every art store for these pens

Good luck on your search! And if you end up not being able to find them for some reason, I'd imagine a small synthetic paintbrush with a *really* sharp tip dipped in some nice sumi-e ink could do a similar job, just slightly less portable... Or, there's watercolor brushes with a refillable water source inside the handle, I'd imagine if you filled that with a good ink it could do in a pinch. You may have some experimentation ahead of you. ;)

She actually made that entire costume (including rocket pack, bubble gun and helmet) all by herself, too! She's basically a space girl in real life.

These look amazing. Also, I know of which school you speak and was a student there myself, and I'm very sad I did not have a chance to participate in this before I left! A friend borrowed my Peter Pan costume for last year though, aha.

I love the look of the brush pen. I'm going to have to try that myself sometime.

Well, hey, if you can find an art school/cool community center in your area, they might have live model sessions open to high school students. My first model workshop was when I was 15, so age isn't a barrier.

Good luck getting into an art school, btw! I'm currently going to Academy of Art University myself. :)
