Honau Kachina by oxboxer Honau Kachina by oxboxer
I wanted to draw a Thanksgiving picture, but remembered that pilgrims are not as cool as Native Americans and food, and I'd rather eat food than draw it, so... I looked up a bunch of tribes and their holidays and eventually landed on the Hopi.

HOPI AND THEIR COOL KACHINAS. AAAAGH. They're the wrong tribe for Thanksgiving since they're on almost the exact opposite side of the country, but kachinas are maybe the most inspirational thing ever. Ugh they are so cool I want to learn MOAR. There's not that much info about them online but someone on Tumblr posted a lot of good links to resources here: [link]

So click through and check out those links! There's speculation that the Thanksgiving story was partly/totally made up, but what's real is the cultures and traditions of tons of native peoples who are still kicking around today! Maybe spend November researching a tribe (and pigging out) instead of turning your handprint into a turkey for the 500th time (and pigging out).

(Also if you are ACTUALLY HOPI and want to give me a few pointers, I'm all ears... I don't want to accidentally offend anyone with my goofy drawings! Especially since I kinda want to draw more of these...)

I'm Hopi, and I just gotta say, love these depictions of our Kachinas. They're so original and amazing!! I don't think any Hopi would be offended by these, I think they would be impressed more than anything

I wrote a paper in college about Hopi Katchinas. If you want a fun story, look up Soyok Whuti and her brothers! They're my most favorite Katchinas. There are many books about the Hopi Katchinas as well and are by far the best resources are written versus found online. :)

Also, Nataska is an awesome Kachina. My phone decided Kachina has a t in it, ugh. Sorry for the spelling above!

Also I forgot to mention, love the pic above - you should definitely do more of these!

Hrrrg jealous of your cool arrow... I had no idea people had that kind of education going on at Four Corners! Hopefully someday I'll have the chance to swing by there and check it out!

i know, right? I went there for a summer 6th grade field trip! (I was in the PEN program at the time) it was pretty awesome. lots of tourism there, but with lots of history too. I dug up pot shards as part of the excavation activity :meow:

Kachina dolls are the absolute best! Ever since I first saw them I find them randomly showing up in my notebook doodles and a lot of my designs end up being inspired by them.
These guys are so cute, I wish they were characters in a game or something. =D

Kachina dolls do just look great in general! I can't believe I'm only just learning about them now. A game with them would be... the absolute coolest thing on the planet...

Ohhh, I can see a PSN download game that is a simple game like Journey. You are one of the Hopi spirits and your goal is bring rain and happiness to the villages. Like, there would be 10-15 villages you are "taking care of" and you do certain tasks to keep the healthy and happy. Oooo, that would be so fun and relaxing to play!

Oh wow that would be really nice and relaxing! I could also see some kind of hilarious Okami riff where you help out powerful kachinas and fight demons and stuff too - there's so many possibilities!
