Creeping Ivy by oxboxer Creeping Ivy by oxboxer
Not quite there. Needs more scary. Didn't think this design would be so hard to nail down!

ETA, regarding the legs: I got lazy and decided not to draw them in fully, since I feel like I worked them out to my satisfaction in [link] Sorry for the confusion! And thanks for the design crit so far, you guys are really laying down some good stuff! I am blessed with intelligent watchers, ah~

Quick question... is this Poison Ivy? Because if so, this is a creepy-cool redesign of her. I often wonder how good the designs would be if DC could include actual mature imagery for their comics. Not just nudity for titillation, but creepy things such as Ivy here or one of my favorite redesigns of Wonder Woman [link] . Not exactly PG, but truer to her origins and (ironically) a more practical outfit than the armored swimsuit.

Needs more rib cage showing and ... ivy maybe? The rib cage opened is so creepy though. XD Perhaps the stuff coming out of her ribs could also be like a flower's stamen?

I like the long arm-hands though ... definitely creepy.

Still loving the legs though!

That collar she's rocking that's growing right out from under her skin is great. What about incorporating some of the alternative, creepy eye colorations Jesus Saiz has been using in his new 52 rendition? With black corneas and pupil-less green irises. I understand a lot of the disdain so many fans have for the DCnU, but there are the occasional good ideas, and I think that's one that's really unique for how Ivy's usually portrayed - not to mention the crazy effects you can get with it.

What about messing with her skin color, too?

I don't want to mess with her skin color much past the green gradient creeping up from the extremities and the green freckling... Don't want to veer too far into "sexy green Orion ladies from Star Trek" territory. Whenever I see green skin in the comics it looks too artificial. Plus I've been thoroughly brainwashed into digging her creepily pale look from B:tAS. :B

The eyes though... I'm in total agreement with you (and every other commenter who's brought them up), they really need something more. Hadn't even seen Saiz's take, very interesting!

Hahaha. Okay. Although those green freckles are fricking fantastic.

Look it up, they really pack a punch!

Her feet look like tree roots. Nice touch! This is one of the most creative poison ivy designs I've seen. I'd rather see Batman fighting her than our usual nymph.

Maybe something off about her eyes. I feel like if you're trying to push scary or creepy, you can't go wrong by screwing up something's eyes.

I think you need to remove the face and replace it with a flower bud or something, maybe a flower with a brain/eyeballs in the middle haha? Right now it looks more like a pretty girl with a bit of a monster body below the belt. I've always been told that if someone can empathize with a character/design because there's a human face attached then it won't be as successful as something that goes for the uncanny valley or non-relate-able humanoid.

just out of interest, did you actually look at any plant for the design? it doesn't actually remind me of a flower, tree or bush.

Gotta say her arms do look a lot like the creeper bits of an ivy plant that stick to the tree... you might not have seen them unless you've ever had to pull it off a house of course. ;)

I think she could use more plant matter about the face; trying leaves and tendrils in the place of brows and lashes might be a good place to start.

Not sure about the side part; a middle part or widow's peak might make a good central point from which wild bits of hair/plant matter can extrude.

Seems like there's something one could do with the nose, also.

Anyhow, I'm lovin' the evolution. Lookin' forward to the next stage.

Something else to chew on: What if Ivy's head is now just a prop, another limb, and her "brain" and other vitals are found in her trunk? Would that have any interesting design implications?

I like how the legs are sketchy, it suggests darkness and that she doesn't need real legs, gravity doesnt effect her. And of course the arms are gorgeous

Oh I like this Ivy. I, think you've got the design at this point, but if your after the creepy factor I'd say she looks a little too healthy-looking for a woman whose half plant now, perhaps a pale green maybe? Also, maybe it's my Y chromosome talking, but nothing quite says scary like a woman with vagina detenta out to seduce you. Take that as you will.

I second the eye comment, all bruised? Maybe if the corners of her mouth made an ambiguous 'line' up the sides of her mouth, like she could open her mouth past where her lips end? That's always scary to me! Really beautiful design.

I agree with mortysir, the eyes need to be darker and bruised to really be creepy. Or not, maybe that would just ruin her colour scheme. I love the hands and the ruffle - the latter really says "supervillain". Not sure about the legs though - they look freaky enough, but they don't look like they'd hold her up. Try something that looks more root like, like her old legs were.

I really like what you've done with Ivy. Please draw other gotham villainesses like this - I would love to see a creepy version of Harley! Or even male villains.

I agree with all the crits so far. Especially the one about the eyes. I would like to say, though, that I love those half-materialized legs. It's like she'll just chase after me, and noting will stop her.

Oh man she's so cool. : D I am loving the colours here. She is pretty damn scary. XD The only thing I think could make her scarier would be if her eyes were messed up, all dark and bruised-looking. I think her neck ruffle is my favorite part, it looks like her chest zips up. XD Or has teeth. ಠ_ಠ
